Making Babies: Personal IVF Stories by Theresa Miller
Around 15% of couples in various Western countries suffer from infertility. Every year thousands try IVF and other assisted-reproduction techniques, but only about a third go home with a baby in their arms. IVF now accounts for 3 per cent of all births in Australia, and the numbers are similar in other developed countries.
Making Babies tells the stories behind the statistics, inside the world of egg harvesting, blatocyst transferral, and hormone injections. Here are fourteen personal memoirs of IVF survivors: many are inspiring, some are heartbreaking, and others are miraculous. From single mothers, to long-term heterosexual and gay couples, Making Babies presents an array of experiences from those who have been touched by the incredible possibilities that are opened up by assisted-reproductive technology.

Pink for a Girl by Isla McGuckin
Most of us imagine that getting pregnant is fairly easy. But is it? The reality is that one in six couples will struggle to conceive without medical intervention. So the chances are that even if infertility isn’t affecting your directly, it’s having an impact on someone close to you – be it a friend, a family member, or a work colleague.
For over two years, after making the decision to start trying for a baby, Isla McGuckin was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always real, this remarkable and uplifting book tells Isla’s story. Pink for a Girl follows Isla’s journey:
- from invasive exploratory tests to an emotionally painful diagnosis
- from conventional fertility treatment to alternative remedies and therapies
- from initial desperation and hopelessness to final acceptance.

Getting Pregnant The Hard Way: A Husband’s Tale by Mikael Svanstreom
Getting Pregnant the Hard Way is the hilarious tale of a five-year journey through fertility and infertility…from a man’s perspective. Mikael doesn’t set himself up as an expert on infertility or pregnancy – quite the opposite – and he doesn’t push any particular way to get pregnant. He simply tells the story of the rollercoaster he and his wife went through trying to conceive and give birth to their two beautiful daughters (No! He gave the ending away!).
Anyone who has tried to conceive will laugh their way through this book. Whichever way they did it!
