living on CL alone as a single mum - paying private rental - how do you do it?

i'm looking at this scenario - and wondering how i will be able to do it, with 50% of income going on rent (at bottom end of rental market).

Public Housing (who will help with bond for private rental, but not with public housing) recommend you don't rent anywhere that is more than 35% of your income.

i can't find any rentals that are less than 50% of my income.

what do other single mums on CL do about this?

i've never been a single mum before (just about to leave - when i can find somewhere to live for me and bilby) so please forgive my question if it sounds very naive - this is all new to me.

How much social interaction should a 18mth old have

I am wondering how many outings you have with your toddler. I've got an almost 18mth old. We go to playgroup once a week.

I did try swimming but he's not into it (screams). I am looking around for other activities for him to do but it's difficult to get into them as they are usually fully booked.

The mothers I was meeting up with are no longer meeting. I've tried to get him into daycare (I'm a stay at home mum) but I've been told I have little to no chance there.

Am interested in hearing what activities you have lined up for your children. I only have the one child and there will be no others.

I just started work about 4 or 5 weeks ago (2days/week) and have just found out I'm pregnant again. Any advice on how to handle this? Obviously I won't let them know until the 1st 12 weeks of pregnancy is up just to be sure anyway. It's a small friendly office environment where everyone has kids, but I feel bad and don't want there to be bad feelings because of it. Should I offer for them to let me go if they want rather than them feel 'trapped' because it'll look bad if they fire me now?? I think they're happy with my my work but it's such early days.

I dont know if this is the right place, but i would really like some answers on DS, especially what the medical terms mean, like cyanosed? And why in the world was i classed as "failure to progress" when i was fully dilated? Fair enough i'd pushed for 2 hours but i wasnt tired, i could of kept going.... and they were talking cs? UGH! Anyway if anyone could shed some light on what exactly happend with jesse i'd be forever grateful. I still dont know exactly why this happend.. Reading on the net it seems having no surfactant caused alot of this but it was never truly confirmed. So this is Jesse's discharge note, its just uploaded so sorry if its a bit long winded.

ADM: 14.05.2010 Apgars: 4 @ 1 min 9 @ 5 min
Disch. Date: 31.5.2010 Age: 18 days Discharged to: Home

Growth Data: Birth: Discharge:
Weight (gm) 3680g 3930g
Length (cm) 53cm 53cm
Head circum. (cm) 34cm 36.5

Birth condition of baby: Jesse was born by vacuum extraction for failure to progress after induction of labour for post dates. Jesse was born in condition. He was cyanosed, with heart rate of 60 b/p/m and no respitory effort. He recoverd well with 2 minuted of bag and mask ventilation. At 3 mins of age he was crying, vigorous and heart rate was >100 b/p/m.

Neonatal probelms:

Gestation 41 + 3
Respitory/Ventilation: Jesse was noted to have moderatly increased work of breathing with subcoastal recession soon after birth. Air entry was equal but bilateral course crackles were noted. He was initially admitted to SCN for observations but was noted to have tachynoea and increased work of breathing at 10 hours of age. He was admitted to NICU and recieved 17 hours of BCPAP. He was consequently weaned to high flow oxygen threapy and then to low flow sub-nasal oxygen therapy. He was gradually weaned to self venitilate in room air on 28.05.2010

Cardiovasicular: Jesse has remained haemodynamically stable thoughout his stay. Formal cardiac ultrasoud was performed on 24.05.2010 and reported as a normal echo.

Sepsis: Jesse was placed on prophylactic penicillin and gentamicin for 48 hours post birth. Blood cultures returned negative and antibodies were ceased accordingly.

Neurlogical/IVH: No concerns noted. Formal HUSS not indicated. On discharge jesse was noted to have a 2.5 cm increase in head circumfrance since birth. Anterior frontanelle asessed as flat and soft. Increase likely secondary to vacuum extraction and head moulding. For review in SCN in 4 days (out patient). Shoulder distocia, noted that jesse turns head to left side, physio has given exercises.

GIT: Jesse was NBM and recieved parenteral nutrition via UVC until 16.5.2010. Feeds were introduced on day 3 of life at 10/ml/kg/day. He was gradually graded up on feeds and reached full eternal needs on 19.5.2010,

Eyes: Red reflexes present. Eyes clear, NAD.

Current feeding: Demand feeding.

Can i just add, his Head cicumfrance is fine lol Thanks for any answers in advance...

After being a SAHM/WAHM I've just started working 2 days a week about 4 weeks ago. I found a FDC mum I think is great and has similar attitudes to me and seems heaps of fun. My sister is able to look after my 21mos DS 1 of the 2 days @work, while he goes to this FDC, with his cousin, on the other day.

He used to be the most confident little boy. While other kids stayed close to their mums I'd have to constantly be watching him coz he'd wander off without a glance back to check where mum was. Since I've been going to work he's gotten veeery clingy and wont let me out of his sight long before calling/looking for me. Even if I duck off to the shops he cries. He doesn't even want DH - who has always seemed to be his 'favourite' to put him to bed. DH has had to go away to work for 1-2weeks a couple of times in the couple months before I started work and that started him wanting me to put him to bed, but the rest is quite new.

He is, however, very happy to spend the day at my sisters without even a 2nd look as I head out the door. At FDC though he cries as soon as we pull up to the house. I don't think there's any issues there because he seems really happy and comfortable when I arrive.

I know kids will most often cry, especially at the start, when they start DC and are otherwise happy for the rest of the day, so that doesn't bother me too much, but the clingy-ness has me wondering if I should be doing something to reassure him in some other way? Any ideas? Is this just part of him learning that while, yes, mum can go away she'll always come back??? TIA for your help.

Hello,

I am not sure what I am after here, advice…stories of success, anything really at this point so that I know I am not alone.

I will try and keep this short, but I don’t think it will be.

A bit of background info first.

About 2 ½ months ago I realised that DS#2 had lost weight…….he had lost 1kg in about 4 weeks, he was screaming at the breast after every feed and feeding every 1 or so. He was also only having 2 slightly wet nappies is a day (disposable). When I went to the doctors they did some tests on me and discovered that I had an over active thyroid, which in turn was affecting my milk supply. So I was given motilium, 3 tabs a day to see if that helped. They wanted to wait and see what was happening with my thyroid before doing anything (see post here http://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums/breastfeeding-problems-support/135875-overactive-thyroid-milk-supply-issues.html?highlight=). After about 3 weeks my thyroid levels went back to normal and my milk supply re-established and it was a dream for about 3 weeks. More tests revealed that my thyroid was now underactive and again my milk supply was affected. I was put back on the Motilium and it was a wait and see game. After about 2 weeks my thyroid stabilised and I started weaning myself off the motilium at 1 tab a week. As soon as I dropped the first tablet (middle of the day one) I noticed a huge drop in my supply.

I am now on 2 tablets 3 times a day but I still need to comp feed DS#2. It took 5 weeks for him to put on the weight he lost and then he simply maintained for about 4 weeks. He has put on 500gm in the last 2 weeks after I increased his comp feeds.

I am at a point where I am looking at simply continuing with the breastfeeding and a top up for as long as I can, but in the end believe that eventually he will be FF. This is not what I want but feel that my body has made the decision for me. I got the ABA booklet “Increasing Your Supply” and I have been doing everything it suggests to help boost my supply over the last 2 and more months, but it has not made any difference. I have tried lactation cookies, fenugrek, and traditional Chinese medicine, next week I am going to see an acupuncturist. I am also trying to find a LC on my area, but I don’t know that they can do to help to be honest :crying:

I am wondering if I am fighting a never-ending battle here. I know that it is only a decision that I can make as to whether not to continue but some advice would be fantastic. I am finding this difficult as I BF DS#1 for 19 months with no problems at all!

I can say that his sucking and attachment is perfect, the problem is not at his end but mine.

Thanks,

Her poos are green and sticky and they look like they've got chopped spinach in them, she's also been pretty spewy, vomitting once or twice after every feed.

Hi Guys,

I popped this in a thread for Barb to answer, but thought I'd also gather some expert advice from you lovely ladies xx

I am currently BF'ing my 5 month old for all feeds and drinks with exception of 1 solid feed at lunch time.

Milk supply is fine - still on Motilium, I found dropping it affected my supply.

I didn't BF my 2.5 year old because of various reasons and am thinking that since I will be BF'ing until hopefully 2 years for my DD (longer if she wants to) then I might take advantage of the situation and express the 2 bottles of milk my DS takes per day and give him EBM instead....

So, my questions are:

1) Is there any real benefit to giving my 2.5 year old BM that my body is creating for a 5 month old?

2) If so, how would you suggest I express so as not to affect DD's feeds?

Part of me is guilty that I didn't give my DS the same start with BF'ing as I did my DD - but another part of me now knows the medical benefits of BF'ing and wants to at least give him a couple of years of that.......I don't think putting him to the breast is an option, he wouldn't know what to do I wouldn't think and he is so used to bottles....

Any advice would be appreciated xxx

Hello.... I've recently started my first cycle of IVF (ICSI) and having read abit about different clinics success rates, I have discovered that alot of success is due to the transfer of a Blastocyst (I think a 5 day embie). My clinic doesn’t do a Blastocyst transfer unless they collect 20 + eggs... so my question now is if I have less than 20 eggs then should I transfer 2 embies to double my chance of falling??? (I know this is only my first round but no one wants to endure the side effects or the childless life, for longer than necessary....

Advice anyone? (Thanks in advance)

Modified Cycle with FSH injections and have a few questions

My TTC journey so far. DH and I have been trying for over 12 months now and are on our 4th cycle with assisted conception. Since going off the pill AF completely stopped and as I was diagnosed with PCOS at a young age, got a referal to the FS after only 3 months of trying, oh and DH has no sperm issues at all.
Our cycle #1 I had provera to bring on AF, then on days 2-6 I had 50mg of clomid (no success), cycle #2, again provera and then 100mg clomid days 2-6 (again no BFP), then last cycle #3 the clomid was upped to 150mg.
Since that hasn't worked even at just getting me to ovulate, our FS has gotten us to start what they call a modified cycle. At the moment I am day 9/10 of taking provera and then have to wait for AF to arrive. Once I have started I have to take clomid 50mg on days 2-6. On days 7 or 8 I have to go and see the fs for an ultrasound and start the injections. Once the egg/egs have gotten to 18mm I am to have a trigger shot. Then as DH has perfect sperm our FS said for us to go home and DTD.

Now I was just wondering how other people have found the side effects with the injections and what the success rate has been. DH and I have talked about how many goes we are going to give this and we said around 3 and then we will go full IUI.

Sorry about babbling on, but just want to know those few things if anyone could help me please.

Ok, just tossing around thoughts at the moment, because DH wants to study nursing, but he wants to do it full time. Actually, we both want to study nursing, but I thought if he did it first, got into the system, then when I start most of the kids will be at school.

So is it possible to live on Austudy payments and whatever I would get from family assistance? We manage to live on one income at the moment, but its a middle income I suppose you would say (over 50K) plus whatever I get from family assistance.

So does anyone do it? How much approximately are the payments? I had a look on the family assistance website and centrelink, and tbh, its just confusing me all those numbers.

Anyway, just something I'm tossing around in my head.

Turned out foot when walking - should we be worried?

Fred started crawling at 7 months and walking around the furniture at about 9 months. She is now 13 months and still wont walk unless she is holding our hands, pushing something or holding onto furniture. I was trying not to worry about her not walking, they all do in the end. But I noticed this morning that one of her feet is turned out 90 degrees but the other foot is faces forward when she walks holding our hands. Would this be causing her problems when she walks and should we get a Dr to have a look at it? She turns the foot out also when she is pushing a chair or her walker around the house as well.

She also has a bit of a funny crawl where she brings one leg up further than the other. It is hard to describe but she looks just a little bit lopsided when she walks or crawls.

Has anyone else seen, heard of this before?

Hi all,

Hoping some of you have some experience with either the toddler tourer or the hitch hiker as skate board attachments to your valco pram. Not sure which one I should be going for - any positives or negatives about either? BTW I have a valco rad and DD will be 3 and a half by the time this one comes along. Not expecting to need heaps of use out of this, but may be helpful around shops, going for walks, etc.

Have to get an AVO put on a 15yr old

As some of you may know we've had problems with a 15yr old boy vandalising our home and other various things. We had another episode last night, it started with prank phone calls, he said he was going to kill DS (this is the second threat). I notified the police about the threat and the officer advised me to go to the Court House on Monday and apply for an AVO against him. Whenever we have had these prank calls something else has always happened later on during the night. I said to DH that I would stay up all night, just had a feeling. Around midnight it started pouring down so thought he's not going to come out in this weather so I went to bed. At 2.00a.m DS15 comes and tells me that he got up to get a drink and heard voices, looked out the front window and saw the boy who also saw DS and took off. He had a backpack, so was thinking he's obviously got something in there and was up to no good. DH who has had bad asthma went down the street while I called the police back. They came straight away, took down details and once again advised me to get the AVO. They went to the boys house around the corner but nobody answered. I had no idea an AVO could be placed on a child. I feel bad doing it but I honestly think it's the only thing that will stop all this.

Regards,
Dianne

He's had a chest infection for a week and on Thursday went to the doctor as his asthma had been really bad also. GP put him on antibiotics and cortisone which hadn't helped. He's been using his nebuliser daily but this morning he could barely stand and said you'll have to take me to hospital. Whilst on his nebuliser I got the car out of the garage and told kids to quickly get dressed, go back into the bedroom and he's barely conscious. Ring 000 and the ambos were just gorgeous. I've just come back from the hospital, he's still waiting to see a doctor but at least I know he's being looked after. Was the scariest thing ever.

So girls i have decided upon advice i will go to my GP and ask for the Mirena IUD, we def do NOT want any more children and i am so over stressing every month it's not funny, i am fully BFing DD2 so i want to know it's safe for her!

So what do i need to know, the good, the bad, the ugly!

Just before DD1 i had an abnormal pap test, i was told not to worry it was nothing sinister and 1 in every 5 women have it, i was to have yearly pap tests from then BUT then i was PG then i bled for 13wks, then i was basically PG again.
I am going to request another pap test, should i wait for the results before getting the Mirena?

I was GBS + during my pregnancy with DD1, will this be an issue at all?

Also before DD1 i had unexplained bleeding while on the pill, i went off it for a year and now we have 2 girls...

Since DD2 i have had quite horrible cramping in the lead up to AF's visit, i never used to get period pain, if anything light cramps but now they start up to a week before and often continue right through?

Sorry for so many questions, i just want to pick the right thing so i can stop stressing about falling PG and get back to enjoying life ;)
