So Chloe, do you think you can start writing up a letter for us all now to send in to 60 minutes, to save us all the time doing one

You can bet your bum it will be onesided.

Aw, I was going to tape it as I'm out tomorrow night... But I don't think I'll bother now. I'll just look on here and see what the consensus was, heh heh.

Women from all walks of life have been giving birth for century`s,and why should it matter how you birth your baby,as long as the mother and baby come out healthy and living. I think we are lucky to have many choices today in the way we decide to birth,so why should it be anyones business how we go about it. Iam sure 60 minutes will over dramatise this story, and make most of us angry, look forward to watching it this Sunday!

Misinformation really riles me up! I wish I didnt watch it!

I felt like sending that woman the Sex After Childbirth article:

Quote:
Are you worried about how your vagina will bounce back after childbirth? Do you wonder if sex will ever feel the same again, for you or your partner? We've interviewed real-life women to find out if they or their partner noticed a difference in sensation after childbirth. Find out who's having the multiple orgasms!
I'm so over current affairs programs. Is there one out there with an intellectual brain? All they care about is hype and the fact they never presented any facts says it all...

The only good thing was that beautiful water birth - it made me cry LOL! But then I nearly cried from frustration listening to the cr@p they were speaking. Oh well, maybe I'm just jealous because "I'm not intact" PMSL....

Time to pen that letter that's in my head. Although now having seen the show I think I need to add a few expletives.

I wouldn't say it was one sided...it just was nothing new or 'current'. It didn't say anything at all really.....

It was less one sided than i expected, infact i think they portrayed the waterbirth in a better light than an elective c/s.

It is sad when women are not making informed/education decisions.

But yanno, it is 60 minutes, you can't expect too much!

It just serves to freak out more people I think, they completely over dramatised the bleeding at the end where the waterbirth mum wanted to go to hospital to be checked out - and with a midwife there they would have had the same drug the hospital would have had. And Tara telling the Ob - so you are pretty much left to pick up the pieces, with the Ob giving a firm 'yes'. But if you guys don't think it was that bad then maybe it wasn't - but still I think they could have done a better job of it!

As expected, the freebirthing mother was snidely portrayed as irresponsible and selfish (Tara Brown: "And so you get to clean up the mess (after homebirths go wrong)" OB "Well, yesss" *insert condescending nodding*)

The elective caesarean mothers were portrayed as making nothing more than a "lifestyle choice" based mostly on their fear of a floppy vagina.

The risks of caesarean birth with no medical indication were pretty much glossed over.

GAH that sucked.

What really annoyed me, was that the misinformation.

They used the terms natural and vaginal interchangeably, without explaining that they are not the same thing.

They had an uninformed mum saying that she didn't want to give birth vaginally because "she wanted to remain intact", and when asked to explain she got really embarrassed and implied that vaginal birth ruins your vagina and sex life. There was no medical information given to state that vaginal birth doesn't "ruin you down there".

They had a mum state that there was no benefit to her children with vaginal birth, and that she didn't want to take the risk of vaginal birth because things go wrong. Where were the statistics to show that elective c/s are more dangerous to mum and bub than vaginal birth? The closest they came was to say that there is little difference between elective c/s and vaginal birth.

They left the impression that homebirths/waterbirths are the same as freebirths.

DId I cover it all??

The water birth was BEAUTIFUL!

Not as one sided as I thought it would be really, but FAR out you would think people would educate themselves before going on National TV. Kelly why don't you send Tara the article anyway and tell her to forward it onto that Di woman! Kel - I also think they could have showed the "inbetweens" Ok so the freebirth woman couldn't have a waterbirth in a hospital, but she could have had a midwife or doula, or what about women who want a more natural birth so do that in a FBC? So yep - a few too many gaps!
BTW - Did anyone else other than my DH pick up on Tara's "shoosh" to the baby as she walked through the nursery?? DH goes "oooh she's got a bit to learn before October" PMSL!!

MR - totally agree with you hun - anyone who has done the slightest bit of reading would know that the 2 c/s mothers were going off hearsay and not fact regarding "vaginal tightness"... Far out I had a c/s and had trouble DTD for 6 mths!!!!!! Get your facts straight ladies!

My DH and I were in awe and close to tears at the waterbirth. What a remarkable ordinary Australian woman. What amazing dignity and strength

Pretty low of (even) 60 Minutes to try and make it seem in parts like woman against woman on how to give birth best. I bet they edited until they got just the bits they wanted. I know first hand how they can do that to stir up controversy.
