Default waterbirth on 60 min this week!

THis may be in the wrong section....so feel free to move it!

Just saw an ad for 60 minutes about birth.....I think they're interviewing two women, one who had a c-sec and one a home (I think) and water birth. Will be interesting to see what they support more. At least it's not ACA or TT doing it....can imagine what they'd say! Silly scaremongerers!

It's quite a contrast - C/Sec vs Home Waterbirth!
Definitely will be interesting to see. Hopefully I can remember.

Thanks for sharing this chocolatecatty, i think it should be interesting (like you said because its not on ACA or TT!)

I went to the nine website, and there is a blurb about the piece that will air this Sunday night;

There's nothing unusual about women having babies.

Understandably though, every mother-to-be feels unique.

And Tara Brown is speaking from personal experience.

If all goes well, come October Tara will be a mum for the first time.

Soon Tara will have to make THAT decision - how she wants her baby delivered.

These days, one in three Australian babies are delivered in an operating theatre. Caesarians are fast becoming the norm.

Right at the other end of the spectrum, some women have their babies at home, with no medical intervention at all.

Not a doctor or a midwife in sight.

So, natural or the knife ? on Sunday night the intimate stories of women who've already made that difficult choice.

And we should mention some viewers may find some scenes confronting.

Now I just have to remember to watch it!

Ah, so it's a freebirth? They really are showing the two extremes then. It's ironic that before maternity units, women always had their bubs at home....and it's being called 'one end of the spectrum'. How times have changed!

Hmmm, now I'm a bit worried. Do you think they are going to get people confused between freebirth and homebirth?

Good point Snacks. That's what worries me about these stories. They make doing things naturally seem "alternative" and dangerous. Hopefully it will be different this time - I'll be watching for sure.

I saw the ad for it too. Oh well, I'm sure they will do a great story

Just remember we can all write in our own comments about the story..

Ooh, this'll be worth catching, I think. But like you guys, I always get a little worried when conventional tv shows run stories lilke this - there's always the risk that they can be quite biased, not usually in favour of the natural way. Here's hoping!

Oh no. I just googled '60 minutes waterbirth' and found a thread on a different forum talking about this program. Not sure if it's the same one, but it's still called 'Mothers Choice', was aired on 60 Min but in 2004, adn is about the birthing topic. The women on the forum were livid at it....so errr, hopefully this story is a different one with the same name. Tracey Curro was the reporter.

Pleeeeease let it be a different story!!

I found the transcript for the 60 minutes 2004 "mother's choice" story... I can see why people got annoyed.. it seemed very PRO c/sec

Hopefully the story Sunday night will be fairer

I know EJM! Can't believe Tracey Curro said her 'medically compelling' reasons for two elective c-secs were the preservation of her pelvic floor!!!!!! Anyways, maybe they (60 min) got so many complaints that they are doing a new take on it? We'll see.

Tara Brown made a mockery of attachment parenting not long ago also, I am not holding my breath. They really showed all the extremes and angered the parenting community. She was also very sarcastic. And the fact they are using an unassisted birth (from what the description sounds - not a doctor or midwife in sight) - its pretty obvious whats going to happen here. As much as I am supportive of those who choose unassisted birth as much as c/s, they should show a homebirth with a midwife which is more the norm, to not look so 'extreme' to the majority of people who think homebirth alone is bloody scary enough. As if they are going to convince Australia to have unassisted births.

Tracey Curro is just as misled, its not vaginal birth that causes pelvic floor issues, rather the weight of pregnancy, things like forceps or vacuums etc. Nothing directly related to vaginal birth, but pregnancy in general. Bizarre that people associate vaginal birth with all this, I guess they just don't understand how the body works, and how the vagina is designed to stretch then bounce back like a rubber band - even your anus or we'd be in serious trouble :P

If it wasn't Tara Brown I might be interested but I saw her AP story so I have no confidence in her ability to deliver anything but an overblown, divisive and sensationalist pile of hogwash.
I wonder if her ideas on AP will change once she has a baby of her own.

Yeah I had to re-read the c/sec pelvic floor decision to believe it! Crazy

maybe Tara Brown has done wider research seeing as she is pregnant?? we can only hope!

Not sure if i should tell IL's to watch it now, as I am having a homebirth (first baby & MIL first grandchild) - i dont want them getting confused with freebirth and homebirth - although they know im having a midwife and a doula.

Oh well, I will watch it out of curiousity - unless I am in labour

DP told me about this, although he actually said to me "They've got a story on ACA about what's better, a C section or one of 'your' births..." he was obviously a bit confused though as I didn't have a freebirth, not even a homebirth, just a waterbirth in the BC with no drugs - quite normal I would'ver thought.

I don't know whether I should watch it or not... because I can't 'unwatch' it & if it's bad I will get angry....

By the looks of it they are going purely for sensationalism once again. Why else would they go to the full extreme of finding a free birth. I'm more than happy to send in either of my birth tapes to see what a normal homebirth looks like

Be assured - it will be bad!!
Tara Brown belongs to the school of journalism that believes that the job of a reporter is to create controversy and thus generate ratings. The concept of journalism as a career in which one researches a story in order to present the most factual and unbiased account one can is entirely alien to her.
Can you guess that I'm not a fan lol.
