Default Paying for homebirth

How did other people pay for their homebirth?

I'm going to be using some of my tax money and then saving a bit and then a bit after bub is born with the maternity allowance which unfortunatly will by then be set up as installments, so i won't be able to pay the whole thing off with it. It'll cost approx. $2500 plus supplies i need to buy myself. It would have cost $4000 but we decided that i should still see the birth centre midwives for most of my pregnancy and have a few with the independent midwife, as she lives about 3 hours away.

i paid mine with the baby bonus. but i was talking with my m/w the other week about it now that the baby bonus will be in instalments and she said she would probably let people pay it off while pg rather then after.

Lots of homebirthers use the baby bonus. Shouldn't have to IMO but they know they are getting something very important in return.

I've been pondering this as I planned on using the baby bonus for next time round (not playing russian roulette in the birth centre again) but are they really planning on ditching the baby bonus? Even installments is dumb. Could be a negative ripple on effect for home births.
The idea of using the birth centre midwives is good- but then I guess you are taking a place in the birth centre away from someone else who would be planning on using it.

A little off topic - but I just filled in Ceri's birth paperwork and you can choose to have the bonus in installments OR as a lump sum.

They are changing it to just the installments next January.

My mw has a payment plan. Her charge is $4000 and we pay that in $500 instalments. Unfortunately we aren't eligible for the baby bonus so we can't use that but at least we can claim some of the expenses in our tax return. Luckily it isn't too much of a struggle. It still irks me that medicare won't cover any of it though, I will be saving the government money by not using their hospital after all.

luckily we are in Perth and a great community midwifery program and it was basically free.. lol..

but i have heard most people in other states use the baby bonus or just start saving from the moment they are pregnant.
