Induction Education and Information When used appropriately, induction can be a life saver. But sadly, we know from statistics that induction is at an unacceptable rate - far from medical or psychological need. If you would like information or to chat about induction, please post here.

Default Induction - Days after EDD?

Hi

I saw my midwife yesterday and we started to talk about a plan of attack if baby doesn't come on his own accord. Based on an early ultrasound I'm 40+1 today (based on charting ovulation I'm 40+3).

If nothing has happened I'm going for a stretch and sweep in a weeks time at 41+1 (or 41+3 on my dates).... and then again if nothing happens at 41+4 (or 41+6).

She asked when I would want to be medically induced if nothing works. I said go into hospital overnight at 41+6 (my dates 42+1) for gels which would lead to the drip the following day if still nothing is happening.

Does this sound reasonable? I don't want it to be too early or to late....

Thanks
Suga

Hi Suga
That does not sound too bad. Most hospitals would want to induce you at 41 or at the very latest 42+3. However just remember that baby's often come when they are ready and a normal term pregnancy is anything from 37-42 weeks

I think it just feels like the pregnancy has been going on forever and that they baby will never come! I'm going through the Midwifery Group Practice at Women's and Children's in Adelaide so they seem open to letting me get to 42 weeks.

I've been trying some of the natural methods and I've been getting acupuncture. I'm just hoping that baby comes of his own accord because I really don't want to be medically induced.

Worked for all 3 of my mums pg (even when she was just cleaning the floor!!) and worked for me too, and 2 GF's i know...

Good luck however you go!

I second Alan. A normal pregnancy is 38-42 weeks, and yes, the last month or two drags terribly. But - "when the apple's ripe, it will fall"...

hehehe yes remember that your body IS designed to labour eventually - that baby is not going to stay in there! And they do come when they are ready. So trust your body and baby to tell you when it's right and let go of the need to know Baby will come! And a heck of alot easier and less painfully without medical interference!!!

I know it is so hard, but wait as long as you can! They can monitor you, bub, placenta etc.... We were induced at 41 +3 ( too early ) my body wasn't ready and what they say about a cascade of intervention is SO true, induction led to epidural led to 36 hours later and no baby led to a caeser... Hind sight is great but you are educated and it sounds like your hospital is really supportive which is great! As Kelly said, its a lot easier without interference! Just tell yourself that you WILL be holding your baby in the next 10 days (for eg...) Trust your beautiful baby and your body and good luck with it all hun!!

Just thought I would update that bubs arrived at 40+2 (or 40+4)... my water broke at 5.26am and contractions started from that point.

I tried the natural route but half way through I went for an epidural. By 5.30pm I was fully dilated and bub's arrived at 6.16pm. I will have to write up my birth story at some point in more detail.

I ended up having a few acupuncture sessions, taking rasberry leaf, using clary sage and some nipple stimulation the night before. Not sure if any worked but I'm happy with the result because he wasn't overdue.
