Induction Education and Information When used appropriately, induction can be a life saver. But sadly, we know from statistics that induction is at an unacceptable rate - far from medical or psychological need. If you would like information or to chat about induction, please post here.

Default Feeling pressured into induction!

Hi All.

Just looking for reassurance that im doing the right thing....
Had an appointment with my ob today, Im 41+2 days, baby is perfectly healthy and not too big. Ob did an internal and no dilation or anything...(bishop score of 3) so clearly not ready yet. I have no health issues myself and am happy to continue with the pregnancy. But i felt really pressured into being induced.

I really dont want to be induced at 41+4 - which is what they booked me in for - and even though i made it clear to my Ob that it wasn't what i wanted we still have the appointment.

Im going to go just to have baby checked to make sure everything is ok but worried that once im there i will feel even more pressure to be induced. The Ob made my husband feel that if we left it till 42 weeks that both baby and i would be at risk and this just made it harder to stick to my ground.

As long as baby and i are healthy, is waiting till 42 weeks safe?
Has anyone else felt this unfair pressure to conform to hospital protocol?

I have tried all natural induction methods...including acupuncture and massage.

Thanks for any comments.

Ha sounds like me!!! I'm 41 + 3 and saw my OB today.
She is letting me go until next Thursday, with monitoring in between.
I say do what feels right for you. I like the fact that I'm having CTG monitoring twice in the next week and a half, plus an ultrasound this Friday.
If you think you are fine, bub is fine and all feels "right" don't feel pressured into anything. its your body and your baby after all.

It sounds like your gut is already telling you what you need to know

Its fine to go to 42 weeks, actually I had a mum recently in the same boat as you - 41 weeks, babe not engaged and bishops score of 3 - about 3 days later she went in for monitoring and had another internal with a midwife and her BS was 7. The next day she went into labour at 42 weeks.

Things can change very quickly at this stage of the game. If you feel good, and you feel baby is good, then wait. No one is going to come around to your house and cart you off if you don't show up for your induction You can just say no, you won't be going - and most of the time once your CP realises that you have made a decision they will back off. CP's get in husband's ears deliberately when they sense that mum isn't agreeable to their plan of action - because they know that instilling seeds of doubt in hubby's mind is a very effective means of coercion So don't worry too much about that.

Good luck.

i was induced with my first at 41+6 and he was born 2 days later. i had very little monitoring. with No.2 i had her at home but i had booked in for an u/s at 42 but didnt end up needing it as she was born 41+2.
just be firm and you can say no! it is your body your baby and your birth!

Thanks for the comments, had my appointment today, now have a bishop score of 6, managed to have a stretch and sweep and baby is fine. Even having mild contractions. Hope to go into labor naturally over the weekend but have the option of being induced Friday, Sunday or Monday, which ever we want.
The Ob we saw was a bit scary and quoted all the statistics and covered her self medically but the midwife was lovely and really helped us make the choice we wanted.
I was really worried about being pressured into something today but knowing what and how i wanted things to go made me able to get a little closer to the birth i want.

Good on you. With DD1 I went to my last appt before my 2 days before my due date. The ob didn't do an internal or anything to see how & was going, but booked me in for an induction that Monday. 3 days over.
When I told mu mum she said it's not right & that induction will be harder than natural, so I rang my gp. He rang my OB & made sure there was no medical reason for the induction. The OB said there wasn't so he rang back & told me that he personally doesn't even talk about induction til 10 days over.
I went back to my OB the next Wed & nothing was said about induction again. I don't think he was too pleased that I questioned him. Especially since I was only 18 & didn't know much.
Anyway, I went into labour the next Sat morning at 12.30am.
With DD2 I only saw my GP. I was 40+2. He did a stretch & sweep, no talk of induction & I had DD on the Sunday morning at 41 weeks.
A friend of mine recently went 42+1.
