Default treatment for recurrent miscarriage and breastfeeding

I have no idea where to put this question...so here it'll have to be.

I have a little 10 week old bubby who is the result of my first successful pregnancy after recurrent miscarriages. I was treated with aspirin, clexane and progesterone in order to get where I am today. I was told I would need this treatment with every pregnancy, and I had to start the aspirin before I fell pregnant.

The thing is, I had a headache yesterday and wanted to take an aspirin for it, but thought I ought to check it's safety for breastfeeding first. I googled it and found that it 'isn't contraindicated, but isn't the best choice' for breastfeeding mothers. It made me wonder about the medications I would need if I were to fall pregnant again and still be breastfeeding.
+ I don't want to risk not taking medication before and during my next pregnancy (I only have a 5-10% chance of carrying to term without it)
+ I don't want to take anything which could get into my milk and have a negative effect on my little one
+ I want to nurse my baby long term, like years, and had hoped to be able to nurse during my next pregnancy if I got my OB's permission.

Does anyone know where I can find out more about these drugs and their effects? I'm hoping that we won't have to wait 3+ years before we can try for another little one because it has been a long journey to get here, I don't really want another one!

Gabi,
Asprin as most drugs do passes through your breastmilk. Asprin is not the best choice for a couple of reasons. 1. it in theory could incease your child's risk of breathing difficulties.(especially where asthma may be an issue) 2. it is generally less safe than paracetamol as a pain relief choice (and I know this is not why you are using it) as it in theory can increase the risk of bleeding also.

It has to be remembered that the dose is really small 80-100mgs daily - so my feeling would be this probably wouldn't be an issue but of course you would need to seek medical advice from someone who knows your full history.

I actually don't know about clexane and breastfeeding... I have a dim memory of something there but I will find out and get back to you - I just noticed that you hadn't received a reply and am doing this quickly whilst getting kids off to school!

Gabi, like you I needed aspirin and progesterone (amongst other things) to ensure the success of my two healthy pregnancies.

In regards to your question about breastfeeding I have to say I agree with Flowerchild in that I was told that the dosage of aspirin (I was taking 100mg daily) was so small that it wouldn't be a concern in this situation.

Having recently started breastfeeding my DD I too googled for information and called the Parent Helpline and was told that the best thing to take for pain relief while breastfeeding was Panadol.

Speak to your doctor but I don't imagine it would be a problem regarding the aspirin.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm going to see my old OB just to make sure, but I appreciate the help you've given me. I'd only be on 100mg were I to fall. I'm looking forward to making a plan for our next one which doesn't have to depend on the nursing of my little one.
