| The Third & Fourth Stage of Labour Labour doesn't end with the birth of the baby - it ends with the third stage - the birth of the placenta! So if you have any questions about anything third stage, for example cord blood, cord clamping, vitamin K injections or the 'fourth stage' of post-birth bonding, post here! |

Kelly I love this! Very similar to the one I am now showing clients as part of my ante - natal. I totally agree it is a must see for new parents!

OMG that's fascinating! Love it! And the perfect attachment too! Maybe we create our own problems attaching the baby ourselves hehe.
Just a side point - why did it say to not clean the baby's hands? Is that a cultural thing? or is there something to it?

It's an amazing thing our drive to survive. I remember Riley doing a very similar thing the morning after he was born. Skin to skin in bed with his head under my chin he wriggled and wriggled until he found my breast and attached. It was incredible and life affirming and made my heart clench to find I could love him even more.

Its also called kangaroo crawl.
My baby did this as well - she was placed right near my breast and moved up and attached her self within minutes of being born - it was a beautiful experience! She has never had a problem with attachment or anything like that - I am eternally grateful to my midwife for doing it with me

Wow, now that makes sense! and how beautiful!!
I think too much stress is put into the first attachment but if we were able to take the time to experience this I think it wouldn't make it so traumatic for the mother.
Would hospitals allow the time for such a thing???

Exactly! This is an absolute priority of mine this time! There is also a great Australian DVD by Sue Cox that is available at the ABA which shows a DVD of exactly the same thing.
I truly believe that these DVDs say more in a few minutes than all the talking in the world could do. It really explains the importance of skin to skin contact in those first few minutes/hours of a babies life.
It is also interesting to note that a Baby that has been affected by some drugs administered during labour are unable to do the breast crawl until those drugs have worn off!

Liz... my midwife told me that the back of a babies hands have exactly the same scent as your breast milk.. no two things in the world have the same sscent... so maybe this has something to do with not cleaning the hands?? Thats also why bubbas suck on the back of their hands when they are hungry or comforting themselves

Wow. What an amazing video. I have to admit to not even realising that this was an option...I always thought when the time came, you placed the baby on your breast...so many things to learn!
