Default Trisomy 16 and future pregnancies

Hi

We have a DD who is 3 1/2 and in Feb 08 had a D&C for missed miscarriage at 8.5 weeks. We found out that the baby had Trisomy 16 and now that my AF has arrived and we can start TTC I am very scared that this is going to happen again.

Has anyone experienced Trisomy 16? Does anyone know what the likelihood of having another Trisomy 16 or other Trisomy is in future pregnancies? I am 35 in two weeks and I am so worried that I have left it too late for my eggs.......

Nat

Hi Natty,

From what I can tell of Trisomy 16 and genetic inheritance (I am studying to be a psychologist and we looked at this last year) the chance of it happening per pregnancy is the same. That is: just over 1% of pregnancy are trisomy 16. therefore you have just over 1% of chance of it happening again, in normal circumstances. Having one m/c due to this disorder does not mean you have an increased chance of it happening again.

That being said have you and your DH / DP / DF had genetic counselling. There could be a possiblity of the both of your genes combined having an increased risk, however the chance of this is still relatively low. If the docs thought it would occur again I am sure they would have recommended genetic counselling for you both!

I am really sorry for your loss and hope this helped a little :hugs:

Thank you for your response. My obstetrician said that we didnt need genetic counselling so although we have discussed it, DH and I arent going to pursue this path. We have a 3 1/2 DD and all my Ob would say is that we have one beautiful healthy child so unless I have several other miscarriages, at this stage they dont need to look into genetics yet.

Good luck with TTC and thank you!!

Hi Natty,
Sorry to hear of your loss. In 06 I had a stillbirth, our baby had Trisomy 13. I don't know much about Trisomy 16 but I felt exactly the same as you are feeling now. If your OB hasn't sent you and DH for genetic counselling you should be fine. I was 36 when I fell pregnant again and I was scared throughout my pregnancy but we now have four month old DD who is very healthy. It is only natural to feel scared and worried with your next pregnancy, I hope everything goes well for you.
