Toothepaste

Just wondering what toothepaste you use.
At the moment I am using whitener and I am finding my teeth are starting to ache, do you think using this toothepaste could be the reason?

possibly, especially as they contain "special" ingredients for whitening.

I just use colgate. You could try sensodyne for sensitive teeth.

hey yeah we used to get the whitening one til my DP went to the dentist and was told he had no enamel left on his teeth and its becuz the whitening does this and plus he eats too many mandarines but i hear sensodine is a good one that the dentists recommend, i think that comes in whitening. We just stick with colgate now

I use Neutra Fluor which is pretty expensive & you have to get it from the chemist. My dentist recomended it because it's high in fluoride.

I normally use Colgate Triple Action, but for this month thought I would use a whitener... I never used to get tootheaches before, so I am guess its because of the toothepaste god damn.

Colgate make a whitening one for sensitive teeth. I went from sensodyne to that and I think it's great!

Sarah - I'm surprised at the dentist recommending high fluoride. I thought the trend now was to steer clear of fluoride coz it's toxic. My dentist doesn't do fluoride treatments or anything. Hasn't for years. And people have complained about fluoride in the water too for ages.

Ummm whatever is on special!LOL! Normally colgate or mcleans. I cannot stand the taste of toothpaste.Corey bought me the citrus flavoured one and I hate that to. Very unpleaseant brushing your teeth when you feel like gagging!

re the flouride - I grew up with non-flourinated water and my teeth are crap. I have so many fillings even though I floss and get check-ups reguarly etc. I put it all down to no flouride.

Yep Chloe that's what my dentist said. For the years when the water had fluoride added there were far fewer filings needed & now with it removed again, fillings have increased as well.

Tooth whitening pastes make my teeth ache too! The best thing for whitening teeth is lemon juice, or bi carb soda!

I used to get fluoride treatments... ugh.. made me gag.. and drank fluoride water.. and I still have loads of fillings LOL. I thought there were studies and that done showing how it affected childrens brains and stuff, so they're wanting to cut it out. I'd say it's more our diets than lack of fluoride that rots our teeth.

As for toothpaste - I use colgate.. whichever one is cheaper at the time. DH uses Sensodyne. DH also only uses the original sensodyne, not the green or blue one, coz he won't use toothpaste with sodium laurel sulphate (SLS) coz it gives him mouth ulcers.

I live in a town which doesn't have fluoride in the water, and so many young people have problems with their teeth... To the point that people in our town have protested that we want fluoride in the water... it would be cheaper than paying so much for people to attend the government funded dental clinic and apply for financial assistance for dentures. I grew up in Sydney, with fluoride in the water, and I have no fillings... my children are starting to have problems with their teeth, and I am so strict when it comes to their dental hygeine... the other thing I heard is that people are also drinking alot more bottled water, which doesn't have fluoride in it, which could be causing the increase in dental problems too.

Hi guys, if u havent read my other posts in the other dental forum, im kellys sister lauren, and a specialist dental nurse, as this area is my forte! I work in every field of dentistry and favour theatre and oral surgery and now focus on periodontics - the worst cases of dental problems too advanced for a general dentist.

So to have my little spill... i was very surprised to hear Tamara, you are getting sensitive teeth from a whitening toothpaste. The amount of whitening is so minimal in the toothpaste and generally you will find the whitening substance is bicarb soda. So there maybe other causes to ur sensitivity. I would highly recommend the sensodyne whitening and give that a go... if you are still getting sensitivity but are highly keen on the whitening side you can use whitening once a day and a normal toothpaste as well, Dont eat to much citrus foods and drink acidic drinks. But i cant say the tooth pastes are a highly effective way of whitening anyway.
I did use the sensodyne tooth paste and the new colgate whitening mouth wash and found it to actually whiten my teeth when using both - the only catch was my taste buds were effected and most foods tasted not like i remember them. I know a few people who experienced this too!

Ellyboo - with recomending lemon juice for whitening, i would be VERY careful with that one, the acid levels are very high in lemon and you will find it will damage ur enamel. Especially if you use a hard tooth brush,grind or clench ur teeth.

Sarah - Neutra Fluor is used for people with advanced fluoride issues but is better to be recommended by a dentist or hygienist like urself as not all people need the high dose of fluoride and can be as simple and cheap as changing tooth pastes. Too much fluoride can work against you too - but it is great for those who do need it and use it!

Liz - the arguement about toothpaste effecting childrens brains have alot to do with children brushing there teeth and swallowing the toothpaste after wards. The colgate 'my first tooth paste' and other kids pastes are designed with lower fluoride so kids are safe to swallow that toothpaste. That is why it is very very important to use kids toothpaste at a young age and not share ours with them until there teeth are more developed and they learn to spit out the toothpaste.

lack of fluoride in the water is 100% based on the huge amount of fillings in most people of that time period and still today in the areas where the water is an issue. So those areas just need to be aware of the alternatives of a fluoride source. Although a lot of dentists years ago would fill anything and usually take more tooth than necessary, todays dentistry is a lot more into saving as much tooth/teeth as possible and creating prevention rather just whacking in fillings left right and center.

Hope this has given anyone some info on toothpaste....

alan - do yu mix it with a little water to make a paste then put it on your brush???

We currently dont have fluoride in our water but pollies are lobbying for it thankfully. Can i take a fluoride tablet?? Can i give Archie a fluoride tablet when hes older??

To answer the original question, we use whatever toothpaste is on special, but im thinking about switching to sensodyne as we both have sensitive teeth occasionally. Archie jsut uses water now but will use the kids toothpaste when hes 2.
